holding a diploma in marine engineering.
i start off as an engine cadet, and ofcourse it is my dream of becoming a chief engineer someday.
but i would like to know from you professionals how long it took you to be chiefs, whether the experience of sailing counts, and whether marine engineers have alternative land jobs?

Hi,

Sailing definitely counts if you come ashore with COC Class 1. About 8~ 10 years.

Those with Chief ticket can be a superintendence, ie. ship manager, Class surveyor, consultant, etc.

Take heart!

are you sailing as a fifth engineer now???it will take an average of 8 years to become a chief engineer if you are a cadet working above average....
of course the sailing experience counts for you have to pass all the exams....
